PREMIERE

La puta tierra starts as a blank page. Eight young people from the Flemish Limburg region, from diverse backgrounds, will color it in, each with their own language, story, body, memory, identity, and history.

In words, images, sounds, and movement, the young people express the complexity of their identity.

It is a story of navigating and balancing between where you are and who you are. About soil, land, space, territoriality, mechanisms of exclusion, and appropriation, but also about gentleness, care, and coming home. A story with a snowed-under happy ending: that what we do share with one another is not bound to a place or culture.

La puta tierra, Spanish for ‘the cursed earth’, aims to give voice to a generation rooted in both the home culture of their parents and that of the country in which they were born. It is anger and gentleness intertwined, born of love for and concern for the mother, the earth, and how we treat her and each other.

La puta tierra is our fourth youth production made with a Limburg cast. Samuel Valor Reyes (a graduate of the Maastricht Academy of Dramatic Arts) grew up in Beringen, a place not far away from Hasselt, after his parents fled fascist Spain.
