BELGIAN PREMIERE
Judith Nab is worldwide known for her innovative approach, which combines theater, visual art, music, and digital media. In 2023, she received the Adriaan Roland Holst Prize for her oeuvre.
While we were sleeping is a visual installation in the form of a 3D-film that immerses the audience in
an enchanting world where children's drawings, sounds, puppets, animations, film footage, and optical illusions converge in a unique way.
While we were sleeping is about freedom, the lack thereof, and about fleeing and going into hiding, seen through the eyes of a child: children like our (great)grandparents during World War II and children today, safe at school or uncertain as newcomers.
While we were sleeping depicts the resilience of the child in a hopeful way.
about the company
For 6 years, Dutch artist Judith Nab studied theatre in Paris and founded Theatre Espace. She developed her first performance in 1991 at the seashore of the Dutch coast. Since 2000, she has been based in Amsterdam, working independently. She has done work for various festivals, theatres, and museums in Europe. The projects, for both children and adults, range from large-scale international assignments to smaller scale works such as the live video clip Twilight, Flash me back for one person or The great journey, a trip around the world in a real bus.
The performance exudes power; it is poetic, refined in text and images. Impressive, comforting, and empathetic.
