“By looking at the aesthetic features one has, their other qualities seem to lose meaning.”

How we look influences how we experience the world. Attractiveness opens doors, but this ‘pretty privilege’ also has a downside. Those who conform to the ideal are often reduced to their appearance. At the same time, young people are increasingly grappling with unrealistic beauty standards – ever more extreme, ever less attainable.

The ethereal paradox is a vibrant dance solo in three parts in which dancer Zoë Chungong explores the meaning of beauty. Each part highlights a woman presenting her body in a different ‘zeitgeist’ and dance style. From the roaring twenties, through contemporary hip-hop culture, to a future in which perhaps only virtual beauties exist.

about the company

The core of fABULEUS's work is the artistic collaboration between (very) young talent and (more) experienced creators. On stage, sometimes young people perform, sometimes (emerging) professionals. In recent years, Zoë Chungong has danced in Jan Martens' any attempt will end in crushed bodies and shattered bones and MonkeyMind Company's What we can do together. This season, she will also be performing in the revival of Jan Martens' The dog days are over
